So I've been using this for several months now. The maps are fairly accurate, especially with the mapshare updates.
Contrast is good about 22 out of 24 hours... those real low in the sky sun times make it hard to read but with the bluetooth talking to me it doesn't really matter.
Bluetooth is great, the sound is good even with my loud pipes while cruising at 70+mph.

The phone feature works well at all but the highest of speeds from inside my full face helmet.

No music like the Zumo though.

The one thing that is a negative is that it is quirky. Sometimes it just doesn't want to stay turned off. It seems that any time I hook it to my laptop to get updates or do ride planning, it takes a few cycles before it will go back to the normal on/off status. It's more annoying than anythng since it's hard wired to the bike and always has power.

If the price is close, I say go for the Zumo 550. I really find the directions in the helmet to be invaluable.
I got mine for $475 shipped and for that, it can't be beat. So far it has been in the rain with zero issues.

My favorite screen is the trip statistics and often just ride with that showing.

I have the Zumo 550 and it does some "quirky" things just like your Tom Tom. Recently mine wouldn't start then a week later it started... 3 days later it quit again! Bummed I decided to send it in for repair but just before I put it in the box for shipment I thought to place it in the cradle one last time... guess what?... it started and has worked fine for the last 2 month. Go figure?

I like you hard wired my GPS.  A lot of guys wire them through the ignition switch or ACC. The reason I didn't do it that way is because everytime you shut down the bike it turns  the GPS off. When you start the bike again you have to wait for it to load. I'm not sure about the Tom Tom but the Zumo takes it's own sweet ass time loading so when I first place it in the cradle it auto turns on and if I want it off I use the switch built into the unit.

Weird..the unit should not turn off when you cut the power.  It should ask you if you want to shutdown or use battery power....at least mine does...even in the cradle.

My Zumo works the same as yours. The only difference is I am hard wired directly to the battery so the cradle is never without power. When I place the Zumo in the cradle it automatically turns on. While still in the cradle if I turn the Zumo off using the units power button it won't ask me if I want to "Continue on Battery Power"  because external power has not been lost.  It will shut down in the same manor as when operating on battery power alone.

FYI... there is a free software upgrade version 4.30 dated 7/02/08 on the Garmin site if you haven't already done so.
